Most transport operators start with a spreadsheet, and most should. A spreadsheet is free, needs no training, and can be reshaped in minutes. The question is not whether spreadsheets are bad — it is at what point the cost of maintaining one exceeds the cost of replacing it. When a spreadsheet is genuinely the right choice
This is not a throat-clearing concession. There are fleets for which buying software would be a waste of money.
